We all experience difficult times in life. It's precisely then that it's especially important to find activities that help us unwind, recharge, and reconnect with ourselves. We often underestimate the significant role our hobbies can play in this. This article explains how hobbies can be a real support during challenging times and help us rediscover joy in everyday life.

The role of hobbies in difficult times

We often underestimate how important hobbies can be in our lives. We frequently only truly appreciate them when we are confronted with unexpected situations. Illness, loss, or stress can easily rob us of our energy and zest for life. In such moments, hobbies are not just a pastime, but a vital support for our emotional well-being.

When you're not feeling well, you need activities that distract you, calm you down, and bring you a little joy. Such activities help you stay grounded and give you a reason to get up in the morning.

How do you choose the right hobby?

Not every hobby is suitable for getting through difficult times. It's important to find an activity that:

  • calms and reduces stress.

  • keeps you so busy that you get distracted from problems.

  • brings joy, even if only to a small degree.

  • easily accessible and does not require much energy or time.

Flour in the air, peace in my heart.

Cooking and baking, for example, can be such activities for many people. These creative processes not only capture attention, but the result also brings joy, as we can share the finished delicacies with others.

Cooking and baking as a hobby

Cooking and baking are more than just necessary chores. For many people these activities are a form of therapy that helps them relax and recharge. Following recipes, experimenting with flavors, kneading dough, or decorating cakes – these are all small pleasures that help them forget their worries.

This hobby can also offer a social experience. When family or friends enjoy the food you've prepared, it gives you extra energy and strengthens your relationships.

The role of reading in spiritual fulfillment

A reading corner, illuminated by a window with warm light, a shelf full of books, a soft blanket, steaming tea and an e-book reader – a quiet, cozy atmosphere.
A quiet refuge between pages.

Reading used to be an integral part of many people's lives, especially during times of loneliness. A good book can transport us to other worlds, soothe us, or inspire us.

During the COVID pandemic, many people rediscovered the joy of reading, as this activity helped them get through the time of isolation and uncertainty. Even though it's difficult to find peace and quiet in today's fast-paced world, it's worth making time for it, because reading helps calm the mind and recharge.

Games as a safe haven

A cozy, warmly lit gaming corner with The Sims 4 on the monitor, an illuminated PC case and a decorated desk – a cozy, creative environment.
A world where everything feels a little lighter.

Games, whether board games or computer games, can also play an important role in relaxation. Board games offer a social experience, help people connect with others, and are a good opportunity to laugh together.

Computer games like Sims 4 or cozy games create a safe and controlled environment where one can unwind and recharge. These games offer us the opportunity to escape from everyday life while still remaining active.

How can we maintain hobbies in our lives?

Hobbies often fall by the wayside due to everyday life and its associated stress. Yet we need these activities regularly to maintain our mental balance.

Here are some tips on how we can maintain hobbies in our lives:

  • Make time for this in your daily routine, even if it's only 15-20 minutes per day.

  • Don't feel obligated, but do it with joy.

  • Share the experience with others, for example by cooking together or playing games with friends.

  • Let's be patient with ourselves when we lack the desire or energy.

  • Let's try new things to refresh our hobbies.

A message to our former selves and to the reader

If I could give my younger self one piece of advice, I would tell her not to give up her hobbies, even if they seem boring or unnecessary. In unexpected life situations, these activities will give her support and help her get through difficult times.

And I would like to ask the reader:

  • What activity in your life helps you even in difficult times?

  • When was the last time you took time for something that was just for you?

  • Is there an old hobby that you could integrate back into your life now?
